What are the key dock seal vs dock shelter findings?
Three of seven named seal families in this 14-record manufacturer-documentation review have published configurations for openings at least 10 feet wide. The three are Blue Giant Full Access, Blue Giant Stationary Inflatable and Super-Seal Series 0251; this is a finding within the reviewed sample, not an estimate of the market. The dock seal vs dock shelter question has a harder answer than the category names suggest. The 2018 model IECC change record makes the weatherseal requirement more specific by adding direct contact with the parked vehicle's top and sides. It describes a behaviour, not a product category—and it must not be confused with the separately amended 2018 North Carolina code. S03 S10
That matters, because the labels do not track the behaviour. Blue Giant's Full Access product is named a dock seal, published under the company's shelters directory and built specifically to leave the trailer interior unobstructed. One product can cross the category boundaries that a two-column comparison makes look permanent. S29

What is the difference between a dock seal and a dock shelter?
A conventional compression dock seal uses foam pads around the dock opening; the trailer presses into them to form contact. A conventional dock shelter uses a projecting frame and curtains against the trailer's exterior perimeter, preserving access to the rear opening. Those are mechanisms, not universal definitions of every product sold under either name. S25 S38
The practical trade-off is old and well described: compressing pads can occupy usable opening space, while a curtain enclosure can preserve that space. Rite-Hite's general seal-line guidance warns that foam and fabric can protrude into the trailer opening; it does not establish that every seal is more airtight than every shelter. S20
That two-box description is where a simple comparison starts to fail.
The mechanism is the thing that varies, not the name
The engineering distinction predates these product pages. US Patent 4,671,029 contrasts inward seal protrusion with shelters contacting the truck's exterior; its background also describes forklift strikes on protruding material. That is design background, not a measured failure-frequency or service-life study. S38
The published names do not consistently separate those mechanisms. Three verified examples:
Blue Giant Full Access is titled a dock seal and published inside the manufacturer's shelters directory. Trucks pass through the vertical pads, with a split head curtain over the trailer. S29
Super-Seal Series 0251 is filed under Dock Seals, but its header is a curtain with a foam insert rather than a fixed head pad. S35
Super-Seal DW Series sits under Hybrid Shelters, combining yielding foam verticals with inward curtain panels. S36
Super-Seal's navigation includes Dock Seals, Truck Shelters, Hybrid Shelters, Inflatable Seals and Shelters, and Rail Shelters, alongside accessory categories. Any answer that treats the catalogue as only two designs misses the distinctions the manufacturer itself publishes. S37
The terms that actually appear on a specification
Compression — deformation of the foam when a vehicle engages it. Projection — how far the assembly stands forward of a stated reference, usually the wall face; a figure measured ahead of the bumper is a different reference. Head pad — a foam sealing pad across the top; designs can be fixed or adjustable. Head curtain — a hanging top curtain, used in designs accommodating varying trailer heights. Beveled or wedge-shaped pad — a shaped vertical pad used to alter contact geometry, including some larger-opening configurations. Draft pad — a pad intended to close a residual gap. What does the energy code require at a loading dock door?
The applicable requirement depends on the adopted document, the compliance route and the building's scope or exemptions—not the product label alone. Washington's adopted C402.5.8 expressly requires top-and-side vehicle contact; North Carolina's adopted 2018 C402.5.6 does not contain that additional wording. North Carolina also exempts buildings with primary Factory, Storage or Utility occupancy from energy-code provisions, so a county map cannot establish a blanket warehouse requirement. S04 S10 S12

Two source distinctions matter. The 2018 model IECC addition is documented here through the official CE116-16 change review, not by pretending the complete model-code volume was retrieved. The 2021 section number and contact language are evidenced by Washington's actual adoption; that is a direct source for Washington, not an automatic ruling elsewhere. S03 S04
The ASHRAE redline matters too. The original 2019 clause is numbered 5.4.3.3; Addendum t renumbers it 5.4.3.2. The 2001 Addendum am has its own visible numbering inconsistency, retained in the table rather than silently corrected. Neither a renumbering nor an addendum becomes an adopted local requirement merely because it appears in this historical ledger. S05 S08

What “direct contact along the top and sides” does and does not settle
Washington's adopted wording describes a physical condition and does not prescribe the label “dock seal” or “dock shelter.” A product name alone does not establish that the condition is achieved on a particular vehicle. S04
Blue Giant describes stiffened curtains on its Stationary Shelter as maintaining trailer contact. Its BG600 description also addresses contact between the assembly and the trailer. Those descriptions show why automatically disqualifying every shelter would go beyond the wording; they do not certify a particular installation. S31 S33
The question moves off the label and onto documented behaviour at a specific opening with a specific fleet. The authority having jurisdiction interprets and enforces the applicable code; nothing on this page is a code ruling or a plan review.
Which door openings do dock seals and dock shelters actually fit?
Rite-Hite and Pentalift publish general guidance centred on a 9-foot-wide by 10-foot-high opening for conventional seals. The register also contains three named seal families with documented configurations at least 10 feet wide, so the general guidance cannot be treated as a universal product limit. Sample denominator: the register has 14 documentation records across four manufacturers: 11 named product families and three general-category entries. Nine records carry a seal label, but two of those are general-category entries overlapping named products; the non-overlapping named seal-family denominator is seven. The manufacturer CSV includes product-versus-class status, the original size wording, the configuration qualifier, a normalized width field, the source and the verification date. The combined JSON contains the actual records from all three registers—not just links or a manifest. The 9-by-10 rule, stated accurately
The honest version is narrower than the version usually repeated. It is not “seals are for small doors and shelters are for big ones.” It is this: two manufacturers give general seal-selection guidance around 9' × 10'; specific designs can depart from that guidance through different contact mechanisms or configurations. Super-Seal's 0251 illustrates the qualification: its larger-opening configuration requires wedge-shaped vertical pads and a longer drop curtain. That is not permission to order the standard unit for any opening within the larger dimensions. S35
The register also avoids a different mistake: copying Rite-Hite's general-line size onto Classic and Performer as though each product page independently published the same hard maximum. Those model-specific maximum fields are left blank.
What does this data show—and what does it not show?
These tables establish what the identified documents say and how the recorded configurations compare. They do not establish how a product performs in service, what it costs installed or how long it lasts. The sample is purposive, not a census of the market.
There are 14 manufacturer-documentation records, 17 code-ledger records and 100 county entries. Two code-ledger entries are retained as exclusions, not evidence for a legal conclusion; the remaining 15 include applicability and compliance-route provisions as well as weatherseal clauses. Neither the product count nor the code-record count is a popularity or quality score.
Three things in particular are outside what this page can support. No independently audited cross-product energy-performance comparison is assembled here. No auditable national installed-price dataset is assembled here. No comparative service-life study is assembled here. Those gaps are reasons not to publish a numerical winner—not proof that testing, price comparisons or life-cycle analysis are impossible.
The cost and efficiency figures retained below are explicitly attributed source claims with their limitations attached. A claim can be useful as a record of what its producer publishes without being presented as a measurement made by this site.
How was this comparison compiled?
This is a documentary compilation, with the final source-verification pass completed on September 12, 2026. We transcribed identified claims, separated records that overlap, normalized only explicit width values and recalculated the sample and county counts. We did not perform physical product tests or a legal review of individual building projects.
Code documents. We recorded document identity, edition, clause number, operative scope and verification route. Original publisher text, official redlines, adopted jurisdiction text, official comparisons and training materials are distinguished rather than given identical weight. We did not treat government hosting as proof that a training handout was written by the code issuer, and we did not infer adoption from publication of an addendum.
The original 2013 ASHRAE weatherseal clause and the historical Houston amendment were not independently retrieved as complete primary text in this pass. Their rows remain in the ledger to document the exclusions; their proposed wording, climate scope and supposed effects are not used in the article's conclusions. The direct North Carolina text, approved amendment and statute replace the proposed-amendment material as the operative North Carolina sources.
Manufacturer documentation. We read each identified manufacturer product page or original manufacturer publication, retaining the label separately from the mechanism. An archived manufacturer-authored catalog hosted by a distributor platform remains an original document, but its publication date and current applicability are not assumed. Platform-generated descriptions are not treated as part of that original document.
We kept feet-and-inches wording in the visible register. For the count check only, explicitly published opening widths were converted to inches: 10 feet equals 120 inches. We did not interpolate missing dimensions, average sizes, infer a model maximum from a general product-class statement or convert an optional configuration into a standard one.
Conflicting fields. Super-Seal's 0251 page gives two different foam-insert heights in different paragraphs. That field is excluded while independently consistent opening configurations are retained. A second Super-Seal page, 0401A, gives conflicting opening widths; that family remains outside the 14-record sample. The source-conflict notes show what was excluded and why.
North Carolina layer. The county assignments were transcribed from the adopted 2018 North Carolina Table C301.1. We then compared those zone labels with the explicitly stated scope of the 2016 ASHRAE weatherseal clause and with the absence of a zone exclusion in North Carolina C402.5.6. This is a transparent comparison of clause scope against one named county-zone table—not a claim that every ASHRAE edition uses an identical county map, nor a legal determination under every available compliance route.
The calculation flags a climate-scope difference for Zone 3A. It does not flag a building as legally required to install a weatherseal. The North Carolina statutory primary F/S/U occupancy exemption is recorded in every county row; project-specific applicability is expressly undetermined.
Reproducible counts. The supplied verify-counts.py checks all three CSV files against the combined JSON. It separates named families from general classes before counting seal-labelled families with explicit configurations at or above 120 inches wide. It also counts each county once and checks the complete county-zone distribution and the regional subset.
Version 2.0 returns 14 product records; 11 named families; three general classes; nine seal-labelled raw records; seven named seal families; three named seal families with a reviewed configuration at least 120 inches wide; 100 counties split 46/48/6 between 3A/4A/5A; and 17 code-ledger records, of which two are excluded. The three matching product IDs are bg-full-access, bg-inflatable and ss0251.
Unit of observation. A product-register row is either a named family or a general published product class, as the record_kind field states. It is not an installation, sale, facility or individual SKU. County rows are geographic classifications, not counts of docks or buildings.
What we did not do. We did not test a product, visit a facility, contact a manufacturer, inspect an installed dock or review project-specific shop drawings and BIM files. Absence of a figure means it was not established from the reviewed document, not that it is unavailable elsewhere. Historical manufacturer worksheet outputs are reported as attributed examples, not recalculated outcomes of this study.

Why can “door opening” be confused with four different measurements?
A specification saying “10 by 10” does not tell you which dimensions have been measured. Super-Seal's standard DW separates a door opening, an outside unit, projection and a conditional trailer-height range. Mixing those reference points produces a comparison the manufacturer's numbers do not support. S36

Two consequences follow. First, wall space is not opening size: this standard assembly is wider than the opening it serves. On a building with closely spaced doors, that exterior footprint is a separate constraint; Blue Giant recommends 12-foot door centres in its design guidance partly to accommodate dock equipment. That is manufacturer planning guidance, not a universal code minimum. S34
Second, the trailer-height range is a conditional statement. A comparison that leaves out dock height discards part of the specification. The qualified designer still needs the actual approach, bumper reference and vehicle geometry; arithmetic on a catalogue's four numbers is not a complete site survey.
Projection also differs between the documented configurations in Table 2. The same inch value must not be used once from the wall face and elsewhere from the bumper face. A head bag's extra drop is a vertical option, not a substitute for a forward-projection measurement.
Does a dock seal seal better than a dock shelter?
The evidence assembled here does not establish a universal energy-performance winner. MHI/LODEM's published up-to-90% and up-to-70% efficiency statements do not, on the cited page, supply a shared test method or a whole-building energy denominator. They should not be converted into promised HVAC-bill reductions. S19
What the standards list does—and does not—establish
The reviewed MHI list contains ANSI MH30.1-2022 for dock leveling devices, MH30.2-2022 for portable dock leveling devices and MH30.3-2022 for vehicle restraining devices. A seal- or shelter-specific MH30 entry is not present in that list. The correct conclusion is limited to that catalogue observation; it does not establish that no relevant ANSI, material, assembly or laboratory test exists anywhere. S19
For a product-to-product comparison, the missing information is the shared basis: the same test setup, pressure conditions, enclosure boundaries, vehicle configuration and reporting units. A percentage and a qualitative “high-performance” claim cannot be ranked against each other without that basis. This is a limitation of the evidence assembled here, not a declaration that the industry cannot measure performance.
What the published gap illustrations actually show
Rite-Hite's archived worksheet illustrates 15.2 square feet of free area for a 9-foot-wide by 10-foot-high door with an 8.5-foot-wide, 13.5-foot-high hinged-door trailer and 4-inch bumpers. The figure is the producer's worksheet output; those headline inputs are not, by themselves, a complete reproducible geometric model, and we did not independently recalculate it. Its separate hinge-gap illustration uses 2.5 square feet. S24 S23
The guide also presents four annual energy-cost categories and a total. The following table reproduces those as manufacturer estimates, not measured losses, installed prices or savings promised for a Greensboro building.

Those illustrations make a point the seal-versus-shelter framing can obscure: the boundary being sealed matters. Some products integrate hinge-gap and corner features; other openings need separate components. Rite-Hite's guide discusses both integrated enclosure features and additional under-leveler systems, so it would be wrong to say that no seal or shelter can address hinge or header gaps on its own. Choosing between a seal and a shelter is not proof that every gap has been closed. The relevant comparison identifies which features are included, which are optional and which parts of the dock remain outside that product's scope.
What does the choice actually cost you at the door?
One cost of compression is measured in usable opening space, not just dollars. Rite-Hite's general-line guidance warns about foam and fabric protrusion, and the patent background describes the contact-damage problem that can follow. Neither source establishes a national average loss of opening width or a comparative lifespan. S20 S38
This is part of the mechanism behind the general 9-by-10 guidance—not a law that every compression seal has the same maximum. Vertical pads have to make contact while preserving the required loading access. Super-Seal's larger 0251 configuration changes that geometry with wedge-shaped pads; its published standard 12-inch pad face must not simply be subtracted twice from every building opening as a universal usable-width calculation. Conventional shelters take a different approach by contacting the trailer exterior. Pentalift describes unrestricted rear access for its rigid shelter, and Blue Giant's Full Access design illustrates that this access characteristic is not exclusive to products carrying a shelter label. A projecting structure also creates a different exterior footprint, but neither its label nor its projection alone establishes a damage rate. S28 S29
Neither arrangement is automatically a defect or automatically better. The opening, the actual vehicles, the required load access and the documented contact design decide which trade-off matters.
Installed cost and lifetime cost are different questions. This register contains no observed installation prices, so it publishes no national average, price-per-door estimate, payback period or service-life ranking. A like-for-like comparison needs matching equipment configuration and a defined scope before the quoted numbers can mean the same thing.

Does the requirement change from one North Carolina county to the next?
A county's climate-zone label can change how a climate-limited clause reads, but it does not determine a building's legal obligation by itself. In North Carolina, primary Factory, Storage and Utility occupancies receive an energy-code exemption covering the entire floor area; that scope question comes before a weatherseal-clause comparison. The table below is therefore a climate-scope crosswalk, not a map of mandatory warehouse installations. S12 S13
The adopted 2018 North Carolina C402.5.6 contains no climate-zone exclusion within the weatherseal clause. The 2016 ASHRAE clause explicitly lists Zones 0 and 4 through 8. Applying that list to North Carolina's 2018 county-zone labels produces a scope difference for the 46 counties labelled 3A; it does not establish a legal yes/no answer for those counties or for every available ASHRAE compliance route. The compliance route needs its edition. C401.2 Item 1 offers the ASHRAE route; dated OSFM guidance identifies its original reference as 90.1-2013. A separate approved amendment to Item 4 permits COMcheck keyed to the 2018 IECC or 90.1-2016, effective January 1, 2021. Those provisions must not be compressed into a single, edition-free “ASHRAE path.” S09 S18 S13

All 100 county records — CSV. Each row includes its zone source, the comparison-clause source, the statutory exemption source and a field stating that no project-specific requirement has been determined.
The classification change runs through the region itself: Guilford is 4A, while Davidson and Randolph are 3A. That makes the regional table useful for identifying the next document to examine. It does not justify saying that neighbouring distribution buildings automatically face different weatherseal requirements. S11
For an actual North Carolina project, the missing context is the building's primary occupancy, scope of work, applicable adopted code and selected compliance route. The weatherseal paragraph is only one part of that determination. A jurisdiction elsewhere can have different amendments, but the unretrieved Houston amendment is not used here as proof of a particular local exception.
Why does North Carolina’s code transition matter now?
The year on a model code is not necessarily the year of the code currently applicable to a North Carolina project. OSFM's current-code page identifies the 2018 North Carolina code and its 2015 model-code basis, while its transition letter distinguishes the 2024 code's permanent-rule status from its effective date. That distinction is why “2018 IECC” and “2018 NCECC” cannot be used interchangeably. S14 S15
The 2024 North Carolina code became a permanent rule on March 24, 2025, according to OSFM's March 31 letter. Session Law 2025-2 sets a later effective-date mechanism: twelve months after the first day of the month following certification of the specified publication/distribution and Residential Code Council conditions. It is not simply twelve months after the certification date. S15 S16
A June 1, 2026 update from the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors reported May 1, 2027 as the earliest possible effective date at that time. That is a dated status report, not an established future deadline or proof that no later certification could occur. S17
OSFM's transition letter also states that the 2024 code may be used through the alternate-method procedure under Administrative Code Section 102.5 at an owner's or agent's request. The letter does not support treating that procedure as an automatic election of any individual clause, and the occupancy exemption remains a separate scope issue. S15 S12
The adopted 2018 North Carolina weatherseal wording is not an open question in this register: C402.5.6 was read directly, and it does not contain the model IECC's later express top-and-side contact addition. No claim about the exact 2024 North Carolina weatherseal wording is inferred merely from a model-code year. S10

A specific project's edition and route should be established from its applicable approval documents and the administering authority—not inferred from the year in this article's title.
What are the limitations and source conflicts?
This is a source-linked reference, not a code ruling, plan review, product endorsement or substitute for model-specific engineering review. Its published dimensions and estimates remain the producers' statements; they were not independently measured. The exclusions below are part of the result, not missing values filled with assumptions.
Safety. Loading dock work takes place around vehicle movements, raised edges and equipment; specification, installation and replacement belong with qualified professionals. OSHA identifies dock-edge falls and wet or icy conditions among loading-dock hazards. This page provides no backing, access, mounting, repair or electrical-work procedure. S39
Sample. The 14 product records include three general classes and 11 named families across four manufacturers. The seven named seal families are the denominator for the three-family width finding. “Three documented examples” does not mean the remaining families cannot have a suitable configuration in documents outside this review.
Manufacturer figures are published, not tested. A catalogue value is not a measurement made by this site. The worksheet's free area, the hinge-gap illustration, the energy-cost ranges, the efficiency percentages and the blower horsepower describe different kinds of evidence; they cannot be combined into a single performance score.
Standard versus optional. A larger-opening option is not the baseline unit. In particular, the 0251 larger configuration keeps its wedge-pad and curtain conditions in the register and in the downloadable records. S35
Missing fields are missing from the evidence used. General-line guidance is not substituted for an unstated model-specific maximum. Eclipse, ComboShelter and Uni-Dox are not rows in this 14-record register, and no inferred dimensional claim for those additional families is used in its counts. A manufacturer's other drawings or documents can contain information beyond the source inspected here.
Verification routes have different meanings. A primary regulation directly supports that jurisdiction's wording. An official training document or code-change review supports only the statement actually shown there; it is not evidence that every jurisdiction adopted an identical provision. Excluded rows do not contribute an operative rule, and no “re-verification in progress” row is treated as settled law.
Geography is not legal applicability. The 100-county file records one named county-zone table and a precisely defined climate-clause comparison. It is not a survey of projects, permits, buildings, facilities or energy-code enforcement outcomes. The entire-floor-area exemption for primary F/S/U occupancy prevents the table from being read as a universal requirement map. S12 S13
How were the source conflicts and unsupported claims handled?
Adopted North Carolina wording. The 2018 state code was read directly rather than inferred from an adoption tracker or a proposed amendment. Its C402.5.6 requires infiltration control without the later model IECC's explicit contact addition. The approved amendment and statutory occupancy exemption are separate records in Table 1. Super-Seal 0401A. The product page's introduction gives a 10-foot-wide opening, while its detailed opening line gives 10 feet 10 inches; both give 11 feet high. The page was inspected directly, the conflict remains unresolved, and the family remains outside the product register instead of being assigned a single width. The 0251 foam-insert discrepancy is likewise excluded at field level. S37 S35
Guilford warehousing establishment counts. No establishment count is published. Such a count would have a different unit and source methodology from dock equipment specifications, and a business-directory total is not substituted for official statistical data.
Historical code evidence and numbering. The original 2013 ASHRAE weatherseal text and cited Houston amendment were not retrieved sufficiently to support their former claims; the retained ledger rows record exclusions. ASHRAE's own 2019 Addendum t, rather than the differently numbered Montana-hosted training handout, controls the original-versus-amended section numbers shown here. S08 S41
Updating the record. Product and source records retain their own verification dates. Revised manufacturer documentation, adopted amendments, a published correction or a new dataset version requires rechecking the affected fields and rerunning the counts. What other questions come up about dock seals and shelters?
These answers address the remaining distinctions between labels, configurations and evidence. Each answer retains the limits of the source or dataset on which it relies.
Does a 10-foot-wide opening automatically require a dock shelter?
No, not as a category rule. Three of the seven named seal families in this register have reviewed configurations at least 10 feet wide: Blue Giant Full Access, Blue Giant Stationary Inflatable and Super-Seal Series 0251. The first two list 10-by-10-foot openings; the 0251 larger configuration requires wedge-shaped vertical pads and a longer drop curtain. General selection guidance is not a substitute for those model-specific conditions. S29 S30 S35
Do all dock seals reduce usable trailer access?
No. The warning about foam and fabric protrusion describes a compression-seal trade-off, not every product named a seal. Blue Giant explicitly markets Full Access for unrestricted access to the trailer interior. That example does not remove the need to check the actual opening, configuration and required load access. Is an inflatable enclosure a seal or a shelter?
Both labels are in use. Pentalift calls PSI-350AA an inflatable dock seal and lists PSI-400 and PSI-450 as inflatable dock shelters; Blue Giant names its Stationary Inflatable a dock seal. Does the energy code require a dock seal specifically?
The reviewed clauses use weatherseal requirements, not a mandatory seal-versus-shelter product label. Washington's adopted C402.5.8 expressly requires top-and-side vehicle contact; North Carolina's 2018 C402.5.6 does not contain that added phrase. An adopted code's scope, its edition and the project's exemptions still determine applicability; North Carolina's primary F/S/U occupancy exemption is particularly relevant. S04 S10 S12
Which one costs less over its life?
The evidence assembled here cannot establish a universal winner. It contains no audited national installed-price dataset or comparative service-life study, and the attributed energy-cost illustrations are not purchase prices or measured savings. A lifecycle comparison would need comparable configurations, observed costs and explicitly stated operating and replacement assumptions. The absence of a seal-specific entry in one standards catalogue does not make such a comparison impossible.
Does installing a shelter close every air gap at the dock?
Not automatically. Some enclosure designs integrate hinge-gap, header or corner features, while other gaps require additional components; under-leveler coverage must be identified separately. The scope of the selected system—not the word shelter—establishes which openings it addresses. Rite-Hite's hinge-gap illustration is an example, not a universal measurement of every installation. S23
What is the difference between a dock shelter and a hybrid shelter?
Hybrid is a manufacturer-used design category, not a universal regulated classification. Super-Seal files its DW under Hybrid Shelters and combines yielding foam verticals with inward curtain panels. The term identifies that combination in this manufacturer's catalogue; it does not, by itself, establish size compatibility or performance relative to other designs. S36
